Mussarat Mirza

RETROSPECTIVE

August 2022

In August 2022, KOEL Gallery presented a career retrospective of Mussarat Mirza. The exhibition was curated by Maha Malik and mounted by Noorjehan Bilgrami. Har ja tu – the retrospective – showcased for the first time, near sixty works rendered in oils between 1958 and 2021. It drew upon three years of formal research on the artist, infused by long personal association. The show was accompanied by a comprehensive monograph celebrating Mirza in book form.

MUSSARAT MIRZA RETROSPECTIVE (2022)

Monograph

August 2022

Har ja tu – the monograph – includes all artwork on display at the retrospective, as well as paintings which could not be accessed for the show. The book also includes representative samples of watercolours and drawings.

Mussarat Mirza’s light-filled images are further nested in reflection. The book builds community around this iconic figure with a research-based introduction by the curator, and essays by Salima Hashmi, Quddus Mirza. Critical notes, in the way of windows to her art, are shared by fellow-artists, academics and writers.

At heart, the monograph is conceived of as felt experience.
Har ja tu shares in the sublime energy, or taseer, of Mussarat Mirza’s life-world.
